Weather Warning

Variable rains this Tuesday and tropical wave n°8 moving in next Wednesday

Diagnosis: Atmospheric instability and high humidity persist in the region. The Intertropical Convergence Zone remains active and close to the national territory. During the morning, there were rains in coastal areas of the North Pacific and South Pacific; these were not significant, amounts below 20 mm.

Forecast: Current atmospheric conditions anticipate rains of varying intensity during the afternoon and part of the night.

For the North Pacific, North Zone and mountains of the Caribbean, showers with thunderstorms are expected, starting in the surroundings of the mountain ranges during the early afternoon and later towards the plains of the North Zone, surroundings of the Tempisque Valley, northern Guanacaste and the Gulf of Nicoya. During the night period, these may occur towards coastal areas. Maximum amounts between 50 mm and 100 mm are estimated; higher amounts may occur locally.

In the Central and South Pacific, showers with the possibility of thunderstorms are expected, which would start in the mountains and continue to spread towards coastal areas and nearby plains. There is a probability of strong events in a localized manner. Amounts between 30 mm and 70 mm are expected, with higher localized amounts.

There is a moderate-high probability of rain in most of the Central Valley; however, the greatest possibility of strong showers and storms is observed for the mountainous areas and their surroundings. Amounts between 30-50 mm are expected with possible higher localized amounts.

The entry and movement of easterly wave n°8 over the country is anticipated during next Wednesday.

Warning: The rains projected for urban areas may again be precursors to flooding and sewer saturation in already recurring areas. Saturated soils are monitored in the mountains of the South Pacific, Valle del General, the mountains of the North Caribbean and the North Zone, as well as the center and north of Guanacaste.

Due to the above, the IMN recommends:


• Caution due to sewer saturation in places prone to this type of flooding.
• Prevention against electrical storms and seek shelter in a safe place in case of strong gusts of wind near storm clouds, due to the possible fall of tree branches, power lines, among others. These gusts can reach 80 km/h in some isolated cases.
