Influence of Cold Surge #3 this Monday

Diagnosis: Cold surge #3 continues to create a cloudy environment with intermittent rain in the north of the country. The projection of humidity due to wind drag causes cloudiness in the North Caribbean and the Northern Zone, generating accumulated rainfall between 5-35 mm in the last 6 hours. In addition, our weather stations and airport reports record gusts ranging between 40-65 km/h in the north and east of the Central Valley; in the north of Guanacaste and the Talamanca mountain ranges, maximums of up to 75 km/h.

Forecast: Today, Monday, rains of varying intensity will continue in the North Zone and the North Caribbean, amounts between 30-80 mm are estimated in periods of 6 hours. Cloudiness will occasionally extend to the Central Valley and also to the mountains of northern Guanacaste, causing light rain and drizzle; accumulated between 5-40 mm in 6 hours. In the South Pacific and mountains of the Central Pacific, isolated showers are expected during the afternoon, with amounts varying between 10-45 mm in periods of 6 hours.

Regarding the winds, an increase in the frequency of gusts is expected between Monday and Tuesday in the North Pacific, the Central Valley and the mountain ranges. Speeds will range between 30 and 65 km/h in the lower areas, while in areas of higher altitude, ranges between 70 and 90 km/h are expected.

The influence of cold surge #3 will extend to Wednesday. A progressive increase in rainfall is estimated in the Caribbean region and the Northern Zone in this period; as well as in the intensity of the winds in the north and center of the national territory.

Warning: Special attention should be paid to mountainous areas of the Caribbean, Northern Zone and South Pacific because the basins have saturation levels between 85% and 95%. Consequently, they are highly vulnerable to the occurrence of incidents.

Due to the above, the IMN recommends: • Caution due to saturation of sewers in places prone to this type of flooding, as well as due to the increase in flow in rivers and streams. • Prevention due to gusts of wind and their possible affectation of roofs, electrical wiring, signs, trees; as well as in the mountainous parts of the country and Guanacaste (national parks, volcanoes). • Caution in air navigation due to increased turbulence, as well as in maritime navigation due to increased rough seas, especially in the North Pacific, Gulf of Nicoya and northern Central Pacific. • Avoid fires of any kind, as they can get out of control. • Stay informed through social networks, Twitter: @IMNCR, Facebook: Instituto Meteorológico Nacional CR and the WEB Page: www.imn.ac.cr
