Meteorological Warning

Unstable atmospheric conditions during this night

July 25, 2024
10:55 pm

Diagnosis: The high humidity content and the activity associated with the Intertropical Convergence Zone, which remains over the country, favor unstable atmospheric conditions in the national territory. In the last hours, the most important rainy activity has been concentrated in coastal areas of the Pacific, as well as some regions of the Caribbean (especially the North Caribbean) and the North Zone. The most important accumulations in the last 6 hours are: Nosara with 94.8 mm and Hojancha with 71.4 mm in the North Pacific, Puerto Jiménez with 46.6 mm and Osa with 38.6 mm in the South Pacific, Quepos, Puntarenas with 26.6 mm in the Central Pacific, ITCR of San Carlos with 72.6 mm and La Virgen de Sarapiquí with 31.4 mm in the North Zone and Pococí with 32.8 mm in the North Caribbean.

Forecast: During the rest of tonight, Thursday, and early Friday morning, showers with thunderstorms will continue along the Pacific and Caribbean coast, mountains of the North Caribbean and the North Zone, with amounts estimated between 30 - 80 mm in a period of 6 hours. It is not ruled out that the activity in the aforementioned places may extend during the early hours of the morning, particularly for coastal sectors of the Pacific and the Caribbean.

Warning: Mountains of the North Zone and North Caribbean are prone to landslides due to high soil saturation and possible river overflows at the foot of the mountains. Likewise, on the Pacific side, attention should be paid to both peninsulas due to high levels of saturation.

Due to the above, the IMN recommends:

  • Caution due to sewer saturation in places prone to this type of flooding.
  • Prevention against thunderstorms and seek shelter in a safe place in case of strong gusts of wind near storm clouds, due to the possible fall of tree branches, power lines, among others. These gusts can reach 80 km/h in some isolated cases.
  • Stay informed through social networks, Twitter: @IMNCR, Facebook: Instituto Meteorológico Nacional CR and the WEB page: www.imn.ac.cr.
